How would you deal with a team member who is consistently under performing?

As a manager you will come across team members who do not perform well. With this question, the interviewer tries to see your way of dealing with under performing employees and your ability to make hard decisions if their performance doesn't improve.

Explain about the steps like counselling, training, job rotation you would take to help the employee improve his performance & ultimately your ability to make the hard decision if nothing works.

  • The interviewer seeks to know that as a leader how efficiently would you handle an underperforming member. An underperforming member in a team definitely hinders the work of the team and eventually the company and it is important that leadership is accorded to only those who would identify the problem and solve it before it gets worse. Your answer must neither show that you are too soft as a leader nor too strict - a balance between the two is what makes an efficient manager.

An ideal answer to this question would start with how you would first try to identify the reason of his underperformance and try to help him with counselling and advices including criticism where required. You would additionally find out if the person requires training which the company might not have provided before. You would also try to communicate with the team members to know if there is a problem within the team and check if they lack proper communication amongst themselves. After communicating with the underperforming member and the rest of the member, you would try to make the person understand the importance of his role and what is required from him. If these don't work, you would seek other options like swapping him from the team or redefining his role. End it with the stricter note that if nothing seems to work, you would take the hard decision of parting with the member.
