Is the change good?

Is the change good?

Let us begin with a small mental exercise. Ask yourself- what is your age today? Say X. Think of mental images of how you looked beginning from 0 to X years of age. If you find it difficult to do this, pick up old photographs which will be able to aid you. Now, do you identify the picture of you when you were a new born or a one year old baby or even a 10 year old child?

Even if your face as a ten year old or a teenager is similar to what you look like today, you are taller, stronger and look more grown up. So I ask you- do you look changed? Definitely sure shot answer that I anticipate from you is-“Yes, I look different, but I am the same person.”

So my next question is, “Is this change good?” Different people may have differing views, but I feel that change is always good.

I will give you my reasons to explain the opinion. Change to me is evolution. When I look at this perspective, it is a forward looking view point. If you look at nature, and see how evolution has taken place, it also seems to have stemmed from Darwin’s theory of survival of the fittest.

Every species has to adapt to survive in a particular situation and that is how over many years, change is observed. And change is always happening. The process of natural selection is one of the corner stones of modern biology introduced by Darwin’s theory.

Yesterday, you did not think the way you are thinking today. Your thoughts may have been similar, but strains of changes can be noticed. You did not feel the way yesterday as you feel today and again tomorrow, you shall feel differently. The transition is always happening and it is happening for the better. Sometimes change may not always turn out the way it was intentioned to start out with, but the flaw could be in the process; in the execution, rather than the change itself per se. Change is a natural process and it is inevitable.

  • Introduction

Change is the only constant, said Greek philosopher Heraclitus. Time wounds all heels, said American funnyman Groucho Marx. So, let us begin with the premise that whether we like it or not, change will take place.

    How much change?

Generally, things around us change in a slow but sure pace. Our body grows at a certain rate, we grow tall, stout, and our features change slowly over time. Similarly, our environment changes as well. The city that we live in grows, expands, the population goes up, and accordingly the cost of living goes up as well. Our family members change, new family becomes a part of our lives, the household expands, and sometimes we lose some family members to time.

As we grow older, our tastes change, and our friends circle also undergoes a change. Some friends might move out of the neighborhood, they might change states, or even countries. We might move out of our familiar surroundings, maybe alone, to pursue education or a career. We find ourselves all alone in a strange country, with a new language, and a totally different culture. To begin with this change might seem bewildering, but with time, once we get used to things, we start enjoying this change. Exposure to a new culture, a different cuisine, and different people will be a welcome change from our regular lifestyle.

People change jobs for different reasons – more challenging work, a different career, better pay, more growth opportunities. In this situation, it is up to us to make this change a good one. We should make our transition from one organization to another, a smooth and happy change. We will certainly miss our old company and our colleagues, but we should adapt to the new environment and make new friends, and try and get used to the new firm.

Sometimes, we find ourselves in strange company, with people who like to try unsafe things like drugs. For some people, it might be considered acceptable to try everything at least once. However, we need to be aware of what can be harmful to our body and our mind, and make sure we do not make this change permanent. In such cases, change will be bad.

    Conclusion

We may not find a conclusive answer to the question, is change for the good. Some changes are good; some changes are not always for the good. At the end of the day, we must find the wisdom to help us accept the things that change around us. Optimists believe that everything happens for the good. If we do happen to face a change that we don’t like, eventually, we must console ourselves with the fact that it might have happened for the best.
