On The Job: National Career Service Portal To Be Launched

Employment seekers across the nation will soon have a national portal to help them. This is going to be similar to popular websites which are search based and provide information about career opportunities, vacancy notifications and skill as well as training available for work oriented professionals. The Ministry of Labour will now launch the portal on the lines of what is provided by the UK Government.

Thw website is a part of the effort by the ministry to modernise employment exchanges and turn them into career centres providing information on jobs as well as career counselling. This online portal will be accessed by employers from within the government sector as well as private companies and public sector firms. Staffing agencies will also be able to access the portal as will skill development institutes and trainers.

The employment seekers as well as the companies and organisations seeking employees will have to verify their credentials before they are permitted to log on to the website and place their details here. The ministry is also planning to provide more details about the job aspirants such as their personal details, address, work experience, educational qualifications and work skills. It might help to add a section on recommendations as well, as this provides the would be employer with a more complete idea of the job aspirant's capabilities.

With a total of 12 million youth expected to be part of the workforce each year, such a career service portal can have a lot of advantages for the employees and employers both. The project was sanctioned by the UPA government last year with an allocation of Rs. 150 crore and the NDA government will be taking this forward now.

The portal is expected to near completion within roughly 2 years. With 45.7 crore workers where one of every 3 is jobless, this national career service portal could be the solution we need. It will provide all the information regarding jobs, job seekers, employers and trainers. It will use SMSes, call centres and emails to help job seekers. This is a online platform for all employment related assistance.

To further the effectiveness of this project, an MoU has also been signed by the Indian government with the UK to understand how to make the portal a success. The MoU was signed last month. Employment exchanges operating under GoI have not been very helpful and it is hoped that the national career service portal will succeed where they have failed.

The NCS of the UK government is a free service that provides advise and information to those 13 years and above for career opportunities and training. From writing the CV to career advice, there are numerous benefits of choosing NCS and the Indian government is seeking to achieve a similar degree of success. The MoU should go a long way in helping them to do so.
