P. V. Sindhu Wins Gold At Macau Grand Prix 2014


Ace shuttler and defending champion P. V. Sindhu has scored an impressive victory in the Macau Grand Prix. This is her fifth win. She was the defending champion. She scored up a straight game win in the women’s singles to enter the final and win it. India’s H. S. Prannoy fought valiantly but could not get past the men’s singles semifinal of the Macau Grand Prix Gold held in Macau on Saturday.

A Thrilling Semi-Final For Sindhu

The 2 time world champion bronze medallist, India’s P. V. Sindhu scored an impressive all win 4-0 record against her Thai contender Busanan Ongbumrungpan. The Indian kept her record intact through a record fifth win at the final after that, beating her South Korean rival.

Second seeded Sindhu initially prevailed over Busanan who was seeded eighth. She scored a 21-14, 21-15 in a match that lasted 42 minutes at the Tap Seac Multisport Pavilion. Busanan snared an early victory but she was unable to sustain her early 5-2 lead. Sindhu started fighting back and reached 13-9 after which she maintained an even momentum and went on to win the game. During the second game, she reached a 5-1 lead. When her Thai opponent caught up with her at 8-8 and then again at 12-12, Sindhu did not succumb to the pressure.

Victory at the Finals

The 2 time Badminton Championship bronze medallist won the 2014 Macau Open Grand Prix Gold Badminton Title on 30th November by successfully defending her title against Kim Hyo Min of South Korea. She won the 120000 US dollar trophy linked to the Macau Grand Prix Gold. She lifted the first title of the series with this win.

Prannoy Wages a Battle

Prannoy fought the tough fight during his semi-final but his valiant defence proved to be ineffective against Wing Ki Wong of Hong Kong. Wong prevailed with a score set of 21-16, 16-21 and 21-12 in a one hour long match. Prannoy tried to fend of Wong through agile moves but Wong reached parity at 5-5 and finally made a breakthrough to reach 11-7 and win the game from then on. During the second game, brilliant net play by Wong made its mark and Prannoy lost out on the finals.

Pusarla Venkata Sindhu is a July 1995 born Indian ace shuttler who is currently seeded second. She trains at the Gopichand Badminton Academy. Sindhu is supported by the Olympic Gold Quest which is a not for profit organisation that supports Indian sportspersons. She became the first ever Indian female player to win the medial in the singles of the Word Championships in 2013. This is the first medal since Padukone won the bronze in the year 1983. She has broken many records and she is a stellar player in her field.
