Reason....that

The “reason that" is used to create a kind of package which separates the effect content so that emphasis can be placed on the cause at the end of the sentence.

E.g.

The reason that Semester 1 students could not score high marks in this test is because they did not study hard for it.

Or, The reason that I could not attend the party was because of my illness.

You can either say "the reason that" or "the reason why" when you want to explain the reason.

E.g.

The reason that he came first in class is because he is a diligent student.

Or, The reason why he came first in class is because he is a diligent student.
