Should Narendra Modi consider the partnership offer of China?

China PM Li Keqiang called up Modi and congratulated him for being selected as the new PM of India. It is the first time any foreign Head of Government has telephoned Modi since he became PM. During the telephonic conversation, LI mentioned the desire of China government to enter into a partnership with India and sort out the other existing issues. Do you think Narendra Modi should consider the partnership offer of China?

Yes

• The partnership holds a great significance as China is one of the important trade partner of India.

• The mutual relationship between India and China is important from the strategic perspective that will give India an upper hand over Pakistan.

• It is the high time for India to forget the 1962 war and move on ahead with China to embrace growth.

• Modi government main agenda is to focus on economic revival and China’s investment in infrastructure can help him to achieve its objectives.

• India should settle the China border dispute that can ultimately relive the pressure from India’s armed forces.

No

• It is important to focus more on Beijing's policy of encirclement rather than the partnership as it can have major security implications for India and the other Asian regions.

• China is keen to increase its geopolitical influence in the various ways including the military and commercial presence that can be a warning sign for India.

• China is enhancing its dominance and it can change the rules of game later as per its convenience. The 1962 war is the proof of China’s changing nature.

• How can India forget that China has supplied nuclear weapons to Pakistan that has created terror in the nation?

• China might buy the raw material from India but again it sells the manufactured products within India that is a no benefit trade relation for India.

Conclusion

If India can work on its relationship with China, it can get a upper hand over Pakistan. However, it is not the right time to enter into partnership with China. The priority is to safeguard our own land and then think of strategic relationships with China. Any kind of hurried decisions can become a mistake in the long run.

  • China’s offer seems good to be considered, but the decision needs a deep analysis. China’s relations with India had been fragile over a long time now. Its not just the 1962 war, but also the recent nuclear weapons supply to Pakistan, which has created much havoc in the nation.

Coming on to the business outlook, just selling the raw materials and buying the manufactured goods at a higher rate, is definitely not a welcome deal. The partnership might call for a soothing relationship and a healing note for the past incidences. But the fear of turmoil, China changing its treaty, would always prevail.

An offer from the other end is always an additive point, as the ball remains in our court, whether or not to accept the deal. Narendra Modi can take his time and make decision after evaluating the pros and cons of accepting the offer.
