Should the road tests to obtain a license be made tougher

The easy ways to procure a driving license are the main culprits behind increasing road accidents. Should the road tests to obtain a license be made tougher to ensure more safety on roads?

What do you think? Provide the logic behind your stand?

Lots of statistics and publications highlight every now and then that the road accidents are exponentially increasing. There are many reasons behind it. But yes, I strongly feel that easy ways to procure a driving license is also one of the major reasons behind increasing road accidents. And hence, not only the road tests to obtain driving license should be made tougher but their implementation should also be strictly done. There should be not short cut to obtain a driving license.

At times, I also feel that even the driving age should be increased in India where driving is a popular “style quotient” among youth and is not taken very seriously as a hard skill.

It is a hard reality that corruption is also an integral part of this system. A very high fraction of people are issued a driving license if they have been able to pay couple of hundreds of rupees for the same to the issuer or because some person in the department is their relative. When such people who have the license but not the skill, take a vehicle out on the road they are not putting just their life at stake but also of multiple innocent people. Hence, not only changing the system by making it tougher will help but also having a strict vigilance as to what is happening within the system.

Also, apart from taking a practical training test, there should be a theory test as well to check the person’s basic knowledge about the vehicle and complete understanding of the traffic rules. A person who moves on the roads without an understanding of the traffic rules or the ability to read the sign boards is equally dangerous.

Poor driving occurs due to lack of skill or lack of intention. The young drivers in India feel the higher the speed, the higher is their style quotient. And looking at the quality of roads and the congestion on them, it causes lots of accidents. Hence, the laws should be made even stricter for the young drivers. With an attainment of certain age and maturity, however the obsession with speed gets reduced but at a young age driving means speed to the youth, thereby putting lives of many people on the road at stake along with their own.

It is true that countries which have stricter driving test clearance rules are low on number of road accidents like UK. Hence, by making road tests more tough along with their effective implementation should help in reducing the number of road accidents.
