Sudarsan Pattnaik Wins People's Medal
Indian sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik has emerged as the winner for the People's Choice Prize for his work “Save Tree, Save the Future” at the Sand Sculpting World Cup in 2014. This was held in the Atlantic City of the US. Pattnaik expresses his happiness at being able to win the prize for Indian at the first sand art world cup held in the US this year.
He also expressed his gratitude for those who liked the sculpture and voted for it. Pattnaik was given the People's Choice medal by the Mayor of Atlantic City. 20 internationally renowned sand artists across the globe were part of this event.
The competition began on the 19th of June wherein each sculptor got about 30 hours to create artwork using 10 tons of sand. Pattnaik also took part in the doubles category with American sculptor Mathew Roy Diebert for creating the sand sculpture of the Taj Mahal. They secured the fifth place in the double's category.
Pattnaik has also been awarded the Padmashri this year by the Indian government. He has participated in over 50 International festivals and championships around the world. He has won many prizes. Pattnaik is known for creating sand sculptures on current issues and social awareness. 37 year old Pattnaik also runs a sand art school in Puri.
The 37 year old sand artist from Puri was the only participant from India at the competition which was held from 15 to 29 June in Atlantic city. This event was attened by several artists from other countries as well.
Pattnaik is a native of Odisha and he is from the town beach of Puri which is 56 kms away from the State capital of Bhubhaneshwar. Pattnaik born on 15th April in the year 1977 is known for his sensitive and amazing sand sculptures.
Sudarsan was born in Puri and he is the youngest of 3 brothers in the family. He taught himself sand sculpture from a young age. Sudarsan started sculpting images on sand since the age of 7. He has designed hundreds of sand sculptures.
Pattnaik is also the brand ambassador of NALCO, India. His ultimate objective is to create awareness and enthusiasm about the various issues and make sand art a popular profession. His “The Golden Sand Art Institute” is the first of its kind in India.
Pattnaik's sculptures include environmental crises, famous festivals and gatherings, national integrity and religious tolerance. Pattnaik has won 27 championship prizes for the country so far. He is also a winner at several evens held in Rissua, Denmarl and Mervala as well as Moscow.
The sand sculptor has acquired repute and acclaim for his fine creations. His most famous sand sculpture is the Black Taj Mahal.
