Here is a blow by blow account of how Anand won the match yet lost the crown in the World Rapid Chess Championship.

Five time world champion Viswanathan Anand had kept himself in contention by gaining 3.5 points on the penultimate day of the World Rapid Chess Championship. With 7 points from 10 games, Anand was Number.3 in the strongest ever rapid chess tournament.

The Indian ace was now in the race to gain a superb finish to find himself at the top spot on the podium. World champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway came up with an inspired performance on the match's second day to gain a lead on 8 out of 10 possible games.

Carlsen was followed by Armenia's Lebon Aronian whos staged a grand comeback in the event to be on 7.5 points. Carlsen made 4 points our of 5 games on the second day. Aronian scored 4.5 in the 5 games.

Being the number one player in the rapid is all about anticipating obstacles even before they arise. The Classical world champions are on the quest when it comes to faster versions of the game. Other Indians in the fray did not make it to the magic mark as against Anand, with the exception of Andhra Grandmaster P. Harikrishna.

5 time world champion Anand has lost the crown this time, but the match between the two was inspirational. Anand kept trying till the end but Carlsen notiched a win on 11 points. Italian Fabiano Caruana earned his silver medal. Being a runner up has its rewards too.
