2) System Control of WIMAX base station

CAREER PROFILE (starting from the most recently executed):

-Project Name 123 network for WIMAX technology
-Team Size 2
-Period (Duration) Feb 2011(Onwards)
-Employer A2Z Ltd
-Operating System Linux based OS(Fedora)
-Platform Windriver Linux
-Tools Cross compilers, Linux tool chain, wireshark, iResoning MIB Browser, iperf

Project Description

-This project is built on 802.16e standard by IEEE.
-Here a mesh network is created wherein the data must be sent to a MS which is connected to the other base station.
-A combination of MS and BS will act as a relay node.
-Many such relays can be used to communicate with MS connected to a faraway BS.
-This project was done to demonstrate 802.16j standard and measure the latencies.

Responsibilities

-Requirements gathering
-ow level design, Implementation and unit testing
-Debugging

Description of the modules worked on

-Standalone BS operation: The base station we had was operated using third party ASN.
-So it had to be converted to standalone BS.
-Setting up the datapath: The data had to be transmitted to MS connected to faraway BS.
-So there was need for manipulating IP headers so that the data reaches the destination properly.

Project Name Base station solution for WIMAX technology (Complete software solution and integration)

-Team Size 20
-Period (Duration) May 2009 to February 2011

-Operating System Linux based OS(Fedora)
-Platform Windriver Linux
-Tools Cross compilers, Linux tool chain, wireshark, iResoning MIB Browser, iperf

Project Description

-This project is a complete solution for WIMAX BS (Base Station).
-WIMAX is derived from 802.16e standards by IEEE.This technology is based on OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) which is the main reason for high data throughput achieved by this technology.
-WIMAX has its own stack which comprises mainly of L1 (PHY layer) and L2 (MAC Layer). Most of the work is concentrated in these two layers. O
-ther modules are firmware for MAC card and FPGA. The PHY and MAC card sit in the chassis.
-The MAC runs on Cavium processor which has 8 cores.
-The MAC card is loaded with linux kernel provided by Wind River. The MAC layer handles many tasks.
-Many functionalities are included in this layer other than the networking features. The SNMP is customized as per client requirements.
-To manage the base station there is a module called BSMM (Base Station MAC Management) module which helps in running the system and recovering on failures and many such operations and also helps the user communicate with the BS.
-Third party radio has been integrated with the BS.
-The MS used for testing are also from third party vendors.
-The BS supports data throughput of around 26Mbps in the downlink and 7Mbps in the uplink for a 10Mhz TDD MIMO system.
-Each BS has 3 sectors.
-Each sector can support multiple MSs (Mobile stations).

Responsibilities

-Requirements gathering
-Low level design, Implementation and unit testing
-Debugging
-Configuration controller

Description of the modules worked on

-Base station MAC management module is responsible for managing the base station.
-Many operations such as system reset, reboot or stop are handled by this module.
-This system also provides interface between SNMP and MAC layer called the GMIL.
-There are 4 sub-modules in this module viz. system control, failsafe, GMIL and firmware upgrade.
-System control deals with initiating the BS and overall control of the BS.
-Some of the functionalities of the system control module are reset, reboot, stop, start etc. These functions are used through SNMP by the operator.
-Initiation includes booting the DSP card and configuring the radio and initializing all the tasks in the MAC.
-Failsafe module works with 2 MAC cards in which one is redundant and it becomes operational when the active card goes down due to some damage. Thus it ensures that the BS is always operational even if the MAC card fails.
-GMIL (Generic Management Interface Layer) module provides an interface between SNMP and the MAC for any GET or SET operations performed from SNMP manager.
-Firmware upgrade is the module used to upgrade all or any of the modules used in the BS.
-This includes upgrading the MAC, DSP, SNMP and FPGA software, radio firmware and the configuration files for each sector.
