▼ Bangladesh celebrates 46th Independence Day   [03-28-16]

The nation paid tributes to many killed during the 1971 liberation war against Pakistan on 26th March 2016. Occassion was marked with a pre dawn 21 gun salute as Dhaka’s skyline lit up. Pakistani troops launched a brutal crackdown on March 25 necessitating the war on the next day. War saw breakup of Pakistan as Bangladesh won independence with India’s help.

▼ World Tuberculosis Day observed on March 24th   [03-25-16]

World Tuberculosis Day was observed in March 24 every year. It aims to build public awareness about TB, a global epidemic and eliminate the disease. The 2016 theme is “Unite to End TB”. This marks the day in 1882 when Dr Robert Koch and his team developed an understanding of the TB bacillus, tuberculosis. There is currently no vaccine for TB.

The theme for this day was Water and Jobs. It talked about how water links to jobs. 3 of 4 jobs in the world are water dependent. The report entitled United Nations World Water Development Report, Water and Jobs, was launched in Geneva. UNGA celebrated March 22nd as World water day for the first time in 1993.

The idea of World puppetry Day came from Iranian artist Javad Zolfaghari who made the proposal in the XVIII Congress of UNIMA in 2000. UNIMA stands for Union Internationale de la Marionnette, (UNIMA). The first such celebration took place in 2003.

On this day (21st March) the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination 2016 was observed on March 21st with the theme Challenges and Achievements of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action. In 2016, the day is marked by the fifteenth anniversary of the adoption of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action at the World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance in 2001.

The Vernal Equinox is an astronomical event marking the start of spring in the northern hemisphere. It is the only day when daytime and nighttime are of equal length. It happens on 19th, 20th or 21st March each year usually. Spring starts in September south of the equator on the same day as north highlights the start of Autumn. Vernal is the Latin word for spring and it is one of two equinox that occur each year. The other is the Autumnal Equinox in September.

This Krishi Unnati Mela was held in New Delhi and PM Shri Narendra Modi called upon stakeholders to resolve issues and double farmers income by 2022. India’s Prime Minister gave away the Krishi Karman Awards for 2014-15 to States and farmers. He also launched a mobile application for farmers Kisan Suvidha for information to farmers on subjects such as weather, market prices, seeds, fertilisers, pesticides and agriculture machinery.

This day was first observed in March 1983.

National Crime Records Bureau has celebrated its 31st Inception Day on 12th March 2016. On this day, Union Minister of State, MHA Shri. H. P Chaudhry launched web portal Fake Indian Currency Note compilation system and launched a mobile app called Vahan Samanvaya. With the help of the latter, stolen vehicles can be traced from the database. MHA also entrusted the bureau with the implementation of flagship plan programme “Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System” by March 31st, 2017.

Shri. Prank Mukherjee has extended greetings and felicitations of the government and republic of Mauritius on the eve of their 48th anniversary of the independence day which is March 12, 2016. March 12 is significant in political struggles of both nations. The current president of the Republic of Mauritius is Dr. (Mrs.) Ameenah Gurib- Fakim. Her last visit to India was in December 2015.

UN is celebrating International Women's Day on March 8, 2016. The 2016 theme for International Women’s Day is ‘Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality’. The United Nations observance on 8 March will reflect on how to accelerate the 2030 Agenda, building momentum for the effective implementation of the new Sustainable Development Goals. Currently, only 22% of parliamentarians are women and 50% of women of working age work. Women earn less than 24% as against men globally and of 500 Fortune companies, only 25 women are CEOs. There is critical need for women empowerment.

National Commission for Protection of Child Rights will observe its 9th foundation day on 5th March 2016 with the theme Naya Savera which has been dedicated to Children in Conflict With Law with the aim to create awareness among these children about their rights. The focus will be on the amendments made within the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, well known known as JJ Act, 2015. Gautam Gambhir was the chief guest at the event. NCPCR was set up in March 2007.

President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee has inaugurated the 40th Civil Accounts Day at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. The event is organised by CAG office, Finance Ministry, Department of Expenditure to mark the foundation day of Indian Civil Accounts Service. On this day in 1976, the Union Government accounts were separated from Indian Audit and Accounts Services and the Indian Civil Accounts organisation came into being.

Zero Discrimination Day is observed on 1st March each year to promote diversity and respect for everyone to live life with dignity regardless of age, gender, sexuality, nationality, ethnicity, skin colour, height, weight, profession, education, and beliefs. This year 2016 has the theme Stand Out and encourages everyone to stand for fair and just societies. Symbol for this day is a butterfly. Zero Discrimination Day was launched by UNAIDS in December 2014. It is observed annually and was adopted by the UN in March.
