    - The chips formed during metal cutting operation are categorized as follows:

    1. Continuous chips
    2. Discontinuous chips
    3. Built-up chips

    - While machining brittle materials like grey cast iron, bronze and hard brass, the chips formed are discontinuous type.

    - The chips produced are in the form of discontinuous segments in this type.

    - The conditions which are responsible for production of discontinuous chips are;

    1. Small rake angle

    2. Low cutting speed

    3. Higher depth of cut.
