Novel or a film shot on it - which is better?

Alia Bhatt and Arjun Kapoor are gaining lots of accolades and appreciation for their latest movie 2 States. It is a movie that is based on the novel written by Chetan Bhagat. The novel too had the same name and was introduced for readers in the year 2009. Well we are not here to know about 2 states but to discuss whether the novels are better or worse than their filmed counterparts. It is not the first time a movie is based on a novel. It had happened many times before. What do you think? Are novels better than their filmed counterparts?

Yes

• The readers get attached to the characters and their thought process when they read the book which is not possible in movies. It is easy to engross in an unknown world while reading books.

• There are many key pieces of information that are removed from the movies. The small things speak a lot in the books.

• Movies destroy the individual eccentricity of any novel. There are many chapters in the novels that bind the reader.

• Readers always feel like a participant when they read the novel. They can closely associate themselves as a part of storyline. There is no limit or boundaries to their imaginations.

• The casting of the actors is done on the basis of popularity and they hardly show any resemblance with the novel characters.

• The best part of any novel is the story or characters are not destroyed by the superficial world of acting.

No

• A novel is a work of a single person but it requires many different people to enact the entire novel. It is an appreciable task.

• One flop movie doesn’t imply that novels are better than filmed counterparts. It is better to see the success ratio of most of the movies made on the novels. Success speaks!

• There are hardly few people who have time to sit for hours and complete the novel. In the form of movies, people involved are more and therefore, it is natural to have critics as well as admirers.

• It feels good to see the storyline on realistic platform where it is easier to connect with the writer’s point of view.

• People who say that movie is just corporate product should try and act for sixty seconds. They will know what art is and what business is!

Conclusion

It is very old question that can never end have a common answer. Moreover, it is a matter of personal likings and preference. The readers will love the novels more and non-readers will admire the filmed version. Both are different entities and have different group of people involved. It is better to enjoy both book and movie, and take the good things from both the versions.

  • The real entertainment comes from the originality. If a novel is converted to a movie, definitely it gets shortened to limit as per the time constraint. This leaves back many amazing narrations and co-ordination gets lost for those who enjoy the expressions with each and every move.

Also, a novel reader never gets amazed by the movie, how far it could be filmed in unison to the original portrait as per the novel. The script and the writings have a special power of description which arouse a unique pleasure in the reader which a film cannot.

Movies are good for those who don’t like reading. For them the film would be the actual picture and the acting is the original portrait. If the same film is visualized by the person who has already read the novel, he’ll undoubtedly compare the movie with the novel and get depressed to have many imprints missing.

Though it is not the fault of the movie director or producer, as the movie is always found better in crisp short time, which is not a compulsion in the novel. Hence, it is always the novel that will get an upper hand over the movie shot on it.
