System engineering basically deals with the systematic development of a product. If the product is complex, then it becomes mandatory to break it into several modules so that the process can be applied further.

The methodology for each module for an entire design cycle is mainly categorized into four parts. They include functional analysis, synthesis, evaluation & design and the description of system elements or documentation.

Synthesis deals with the notion or process that assists in acquiring the functional requirements to be fulfilled. Three major tools such as modeling, dynamics and optimization play a crucial role in it.

Functional analysis signifies the notion of specifying the requirements for the development of a product whereas the evaluation and decision offers the trade-off between operational & engineering requirements.

However, the description of system elements is represented in the form of documentation details.
