A train started at 9:00 a.m. at station X with a speed of 72 kmph. After two hours, another train started at station Y towards X with a speed of 90 kmph. The two trains are expected to cross each other at 1:30 p.m. Owing to a signal problem arising at 12 noon, the speed of each of them was reduced by the same quantity and they crossed each other at 4:30 p.m.
What is the new speed of the train that started from station X?

Options
- 18 kmph
- 36 kmph
- 45 kmph
- 54 kmph

CORRECT ANSWER : 18 kmph

ans

They cross each other at 1:30 pm which means the distance is 549 km.
At 12 noon, a signal was down, distance travelled by x and y at 12 noon is 306 km. Rest of the distance will be covered in 4.5 hr which mean the relative speed is 54 km.
After reducing an equal speed from the speed of both the trains, the equation is like this:
72 – p + 90 – p = 54
So, p = 54
